MARS - 1

available work

(Boulder, Colorado in 1977) Lives and works in San Francisco, CA. Mario Martinez (aka MARS-1) paints from a penetrating perspective of great depth. Viewers are drawn into his imaginative compositions, overflowing with colorful geometric and organic shapes, layered to form unique patterns and textures.

The artist's signature style of vast, abstracted, quasi-extraterrestrial looking landscapes features imagery of surreal distortions, contained within spherically convex transparent bubbles. Skillfully combining optical color blending with perspective line work, his painting techniques result in very three-dimensional forms, which echo the anatomy of architecture, and microcosmic structures of biology.

In this highly mathematical work, infused with an intense fascination for natural biology and quantum mechanics, Martinez conveys an immersive visceral experience.

Exhibitions of his work have been hosted at venues in San Francisco, New York, Detroit, Toronto, Lisbon, Italy, and Brazil. He participated in The Vader Project (2009) at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh and was a part of a group exhibition entitled Robots: An Evolution of a Cultural Icon (2008) at the San Jose Museum of Art, California; Natural and Unnatural: Imagining Landscape, Hunterdon Museum of Art, Clinton, NJ. In 2019 LACMA Museum will host a Mars-1 retrospective show.
